How to Attach a Glass Splashback Tile to a Wall

Glass backsplash tiles are available in a wide selection of colors, shapes and sizes. Specialty tile suppliers or your local home improvement store will have glass tile sheets available for uncomplicated installation. Cutting the tiles for a perfect fit will require a wet saw.A glass backsplash will add a sparkly, contemporary element to your kitchen or bathroom decor.
1,Measure the width and height of the backsplash area with a tape measure. Multiply the width by the height to determine the square footage needed for your glass tile sheet purchase.
2,Measure and cut adhesive tile matting with scissors to fit the tile area. The matting is extremely sticky and will adhere to almost any surface without preparation.
3,Hold a chalk line marker at the center top of the tile area and snap the line to mark a chalk plum line for tile placement.
4,Cut the tiles to fit the area with a wet saw while wearing goggles and protective gloves. Press the tiles on the matting, moving from the center plumb line to the area edges and separating the tiles with 1/4-inch spacers. After all tile has been pressed to the matting, remove the spacers.
5,Cover the tiles with premixed grout, using a grout float and pressing the grout into the spaces between the tiles. Use the edge of the float to remove the excess grout.
6,Fill a bucket with water and dip a grout sponge in the water. Wring out the sponge. Wipe the tile to remove excess grout, cleaning the sponge after every wipe. Let the grout dry for one hour. Remove the grout haze with a soft cloth.

How to Install Mosaic Tile?

While mosaic tile surfaces look intricate, creating these tiled designs may not be as difficult as you expect. The options for installing mosaic tiles are to create your own designs with individual tiles or to purchase sheets of tiles mounted on a mesh backing. .
Sheet Tiles
Sheet tiles are easier than individual tiles to install as they come in sheets, typically 12-by-12-inches with the tiles already glued to a mesh backing. You just install each sheet, ensuring the correct spacing between each one, and that they're correctly aligned vertically and horizontally. If you need less than a complete sheet, cut along the mesh to obtain the required number of tiles in the shape you need. Create your own patterns by buying tiles of sheets in solid colors and cutting strips of color from each one.
Individual Tiles
Individual mosaic tiles are typically either 1-inch or 2-inches square, and laying them individually allows you total freedom in your design. However, you must line up each small tile with its neighbors and, unless you're creating an abstract, organic design, you need to draw multiple grid lines to aid the tile placement and set the tiles a uniform distance apart by using spacers. This time-consuming task means that you must cover only a small section of the surface at a time with tile adhesive so that you can place all the tiles before the glue dries.

Tile Laying Techniques for Uneven Surfaces

An uneven floor or wall surface can lead to several problems in a tile job. Tiles may crack, pop loose or "lip" -- a condition that occurs when the corners or edges of some tiles stick up higher than those around them. Many older homes have uneven surfaces, but several techniques can be used to help lay the tiles in a way that will not lead to damage.
Floor Leveling Compound
If the substrate the floor tiles are being installed on is uneven but structurally sound, a self-leveling floor compound can be used to even it out. Self-leveling floor compounds are liquid bases that seek out the low areas on a floor and fill them in. They are typically poured over the entire floor; not just uneven areas, and they require no smoothing or additional leveling once dry. They take 24 to 48 hours to cure and the tiles can be installed right on top. Keep in mind, however, that a self-leveling floor compound will increase the thickness of the finished floor, so transitions to adjacent rooms may need thresholds.
Back Buttering
Back buttering is a trick used for tiles of uneven thickness, like ungauged slate or handmade tiles, extremely large tiles or for tiles being installed on an uneven surface. The mortar is spread over the substrate and keyed, or grooved, as usual. A second application of mortar is placed directly onto the backs of the tiles. Extra mortar is placed on those areas that need it, such as thin spots on tiles or low spots on the substrate. The extra mortar in the low areas helps even out the appearance of the final installation and creates a smooth surface.
Mosaic Tiles
Large-format tiles are the most difficult to install over an uneven surface because they have no way to bend or flex over a hump or valley. Mosaic tiles, however, can be installed over extremely uneven surfaces with little problem. Because each individual tile measures 2 inches or less in size, the tiles are able to move with an uneven surface, going up or down as the surface demands. The more uneven or curved a surface is, the smaller the tile should be to accommodate it easily. Mosaic tiles are available in sizes as small as 3/8-inch, which can accommodate any surface.
Beating In
If the surface is only mildly uneven and is only producing mild lipping at the corners of the tiles, beating the tiles into the mortar bed can reduce the issue. Use a trowel with a 1/4- to 1/2-inch groove to produce an extra thick mortar bed for the tiles. Lay a flat board over the tiles, paying attention to the uneven spots, and beat the board with a rubber mallet. This will drive the tiles deeper into the mortar; if more pressure is placed on low spots than on high ones, it can even out the finished surface of the tile installation.

Mosaic Tips

  • Start simple.
  • Make a small mosaic plaque before you mosaic a wall or floor. That way you can work out your materials and methods before the big job.
  • How can you draw a design? Simple drawings like those in a coloring book work best. The color and the details come when you add the tile and glass. I always sketch something on paper and then come home and draw a simple cartoon on my plywood or concrete board using a magic marker.
  • My first rule of grouts is to choose a contrasting color. If you use white grout with white tile or grey grout with grey tiles, then the tiles don’t stand out from the grout, and most of the detail of your design will be lost.
  • My personal second rule of grouts is that DARKER GROUTS ALMOST ALWAYS LOOK BETTER. I have almost always been disappointed when using plain white grout. White grout makes a nice mosaic look like a summer camp project! Try an off-white or light beige if you think you need a light color. Also remember that grouts are much darker while they are wet and get lighter as they cure.
  • Don’t know anything about glues, grouts or tiling? Your local hardware store or handyman is a mosaic expert even though they’ve never made one. (You might not know anyone who has made a mosaic, but you probably know someone who has tiled a bathroom or kitchen. The technical skills are very similar.)
  • Use a wheeled glass cutter to cut glass and smalti. Use a tile nipper to cut ceramic tiles, china and other dishes.
  • Always wear safety glasses when cutting tile or glass or mixing grout. (Grout is mildly caustic and has sand and grit in it.) Making a mosaic can be fun but you should always be careful.
  • Grout mosaics outside. It’s a messy process. Look at books on home improvement for basic techniques of grouting if you’re not sure. Keep grout damp as it cures and do not allow it to dry out rapidly, otherwise it will crumble. Remember, the grout is binding water internally in a chemical process as it cure. It is NOT drying.
Keep mosaic tiles and supplies out of reach of children. Use caution when handling the broken glass and ceramics.
  • Spend a little more time on your mosaic. Don’t rush and don’t think about what you want to make next. It can make a world of difference in your satisfaction.
  • Avoid plywood as a backer unless you can seal the edges and bottom. Wood materials absorb water over time and warp, and then grout and tiles pop off. You might not be trying to recreate a timeless Roman mosaic that will endure for centuries, but at least make something that will last 2 or 3 years. Use plywood at least 1/2″ thick inside and concrete or concrete board outside. Always use concrete or concrete board as the base of any mosaic that will be walked on. Concrete board can be purchased from building material stores. A common brand name is Wonderboard. For my indoor mosaics, I laminate 1/4″ Wonderboard to 3/8″ plywood.
  • The best all-around glue for making mosaics is Weldbond. It is a water-based adhesive that looks and handles just like plain white glue, yet it cures stronger than many of the smelly solvent-based glues. The manufacturer’s brochure calls it “the most versatile, non-toxic, non-flammable adhesive on the North American market.” I agree. It bonds to hundreds of different materials and is very water-resistant once it dries. It cleans up easy with soap and water.
  • If you make a mistake, don’t be afraid to pry some of the tiles off if you don’t like what you see. (Wear goggles or safety glasses with side shields.)
  • I always wait for a week or two before I grout a piece. That way I have a chance to change things before they are literally set in concrete.
  • Simple and crude can also be noble. It’s ok if your art has blemishes and mistakes. That’s what makes it interesting and keeps it from looking like it was made on an assembly line. Don’t try to make it a perfect reproduction of anything, and you’ll probably be much happier with the time spent and the results.

How to Make a stained glass mosaic portrait from a photograph

Make a stained glass mosaic portrait from a photograph
Materials and Tools:
enlarged photograph,mat board,masking tape,clear adhesive shelf liner
several colors and shades of opaque stained glass, plastic containers, glass cutter
square-nose pliers,glass nippers,tweezers,diamond wheel glass grinder,safety glasses
latex gloves, black felt-tip pen,ultra-sticky clear adhesive film, piece of tile backer board (cement board)
craft knife,epoxy adhesive,notched trowel,roll of paper towels,instant glue,premixed grout,rubber float
sponge,picture frame,books (for weight)
Steps:mosaic-portrait
1. Tape the enlarged photograph face to a piece of mat board.
2. Cut a piece of clear adhesive film slightly larger than the photo.
3. Tape the adhesive film, sticky side up, over the photo with masking tape. The paper backing covering the adhesive film will be facing up.
4. Cut through the paper backing of the adhesive film with a craft knife. Then peel away portions of the paper backing to expose parts of the photo, starting with the face. If the entire photo is exposed, it tends to pick up dust from the room and reduce the stickiness of the adhesive.
5. Wearing safety glasses, score glass of assorted colors into strips with a glass cutter and break them with square-nose pliers.
6. Cut pieces of stained-glass strips into a variety of sizes with glass nippers. Store the pieces in plastic containers divided by colors.
7. Place the mosaic pieces on the adhesive over the photo. Use the photo as a guide to create the portrait. For some sections of the face, such as the eyes, the glass pieces will need to be ground on a glass grinder to achieve the right shape or smoothness.
8. Once the design is complete, place a stickier clear adhesive film over the top of the mosaic. Use a paper towel to smooth the adhesive.
9. Trim the edges of the adhesive film with a craft knife. Grab the edges and gently flip the piece over.
10. Peel away the less sticky adhesive film, leaving the glass adhered, face down, to the stickier film.
11. Cut a piece of cement board the same size as the photograph.
12. Mix the epoxy adhesive and trowel it onto the cement board.
13. Carefully pick up the film and the glass and put it on the cement board. Place heavy books on top to weigh it down.
14. Let the mosaic dry overnight.
15. Slowly peel away the clear face mounting film from the glass. Occasionally, the odd piece of glass won't have stuck and comes up with the sticky film-reattach it with instant glue.
16. Spread premixed grout over the tiles with a flat trowel, getting it into the cracks. With a damp sponge, wipe down the tiles to remove the excess grout.
17. Put the portrait in a picture frame.

How to Make a mosaic tile tray

Clean tray by dusting or wiping with a slightly damp cloth to remove fine wood particles and dust. Paint with craft paint in a colour of your choice.1

If required apply a second coat to ensure a professional finish. Always wait for the first coat to be 100% dry before progressing
2
You do not need to paint the area where the mosaic work will be done as this surface will be completely covered by mosaic and grout.
3
For this mosaic I have chosen some beautiful inserts - blocks with words, flowers, stems and some leaves. The first step is to decide where these go and glue them in place.
4
To match the inserts I have selected mosaic tiles with colours that work together. There are no rules - just have fun .Glue each piece as you go along, spread a little glue on tray and place tile.
5
The entire area around the inserts now needs to be filled by glueing down mosaic tiles. Start with the border and work towards the centre.
6
You will need to cut, trim or shape some of the mosaic pieces to fit around the inserts as you go along. Use a tile cutter - perfect shape is not needed, the grout will fill in the gaps.
7
To make it more exciting play with some additional colours. Just keep going - spread some glue, place the tiles piece by piece. The glue is easy to peel off your fingers if it gets messy.
8
Perhaps add some tiles with different textures and sizes as you fill the tray working towards the centre. You can also cut tiles into halves and quarters - again, there are no rules
9
To give a completely different feel in the centre I chose to break the tiles into pieces creating pieces that are diverse in shape and size.
10
These are "scattered" around to fill the centre of the tray.
11
The glue needs to dry before grouting can be added, read the glue label for drying time. If unsure 3 to 4 house should do it, overnight is perfect.
12
In a tub Mix about 5 heaped tablespoons of grout with small amounts of water at a time, you are looking for is a paste between the consistency of mayonnaise and tooth paste.
13
Use a spatula and spread the grout liberally over your mosaic. I used a black grout and added a bit of glitter for bling. Grout comes in various colours including white & shades of grey and brown.
14
Start in the centre and work outward to cover the entire tray in grout.
15
It is messy but keep going making sure that every gap is filled with the grout.
16
When completed gently wipe off with a dry cloth to remove a bit of the excess - do not press cloth into the gaps. Now sprinkle some dry grout on top - this helps the grout to not sink when it dries.
17
Wait 5 - 10 minutes and wipe the surface again to remove excess grout on the tiles. Do not remove grout in gaps. With a wet cloth clean any grout that was messed on the rest of the tray.
18
Continue by using a slightly damp cloth wrapped around your finger to gently and cautiously clean any little bits of remaining grout on the inserts.
19
Leave to dry for several hours (about 4-5 hours).
20
The final product and a perfect gift for someone special!!
